Fish at the Pescheria

The beautiful fish-carved columns at the Rialto fish market.

Hi Sally and Brentiovanni

Look, I suppose those little scraps of art at the Biennale are ok. The wax candle statues in particular have given us an idea for something to put on mum's birthday cake this year. However they don't come close to the beauty of the fish carvings at the Rialto Fish Market. Actually I'm a little jealous of those carvings as I once tried to sculpt my own fish out of clay in a Year 10 Art class. It was really weird though; I started out creating a fish but by the time it was finished it looked like a particular part of the male anatomy. Even stranger was that the same thing happened to every boy in the class! They might be sculpting a Greek god, a Henry Moore inspired masterpiece or just their pet hamster but they all ended up with little wedding tackle sitting in front of them. It was a little unnerving gazing around the room; it looked like we had been invaded by mutant slugs from outer space.
Fortunately the Italian stonemasons at the Rialto don’t seem to have had the same difficulties as the boys from Watsonia High otherwise those columns would be seriously scary and fish sales would no doubt plummet.
Keep the photos coming as they are a pleasure to behold. We are of course hanging out for the shot of a Venetian Border terrier sitting in a gondola with a little beret perched on its head at a rakish angle.
