From Canal Saint Martin to Canal+

Today was another of those days when we headed out for an hour or two at 10am and then didn't arrive back at the apartment until 5pm! Where does the time go?

Over coffee and croissant at Le Preau we decided to visit the Boulevard Richard Lenoir market, walk along Canal Saint Martin in the 10th, back through the 2nd arrondissement along rue Montorgeuil, and then home via Les Halles visiting the cinema centre Forum des Images on the way. This could have taken an hour, but it was a beautiful day and we just couldn't soak up enough of the Paris streets.

The Richard Lenoir market has many of the same stallholders as the Thursday and Saturday Bastille market. Today Brent passed up the Lebanese pizza and indulged in baguette stuffed with Polish sausage. It was too early for me to take on the choucroute (sauerkraut), but maybe I'll indulge at the Bastille market later this week.

Last year we took a cruise along Canal Saint Martin and today was a chance to explore the colourful strip of cafes, local designer and art bookshops.

Rue Montorgueil is a pedestrian-only street lined with cafes offering Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese, French and fast food, bars offering juice and ice-cream, and bars of the alcoholic variety. Tres bon! Needless to say we stopped here for a late lunch.

Les Halles is the site of the old Paris market, since closed, and there is an interesting walk-through garden area (plus a super-ugly multi-storey - mostly underground - shopping complex on the site where the market used to be).

Tonight we were part of the studio audience of 60 invited guests (thanks to Brent and the heads up from rockerparis blogspot) for the filming of two Canal+ TV shows. The first segment of the night was a demonstration of the marionettes who star in a show called "Les Guignols de l'info", a satirical commentary on the news of the day by puppets similar to those we know in Spitting Image or Rubbery Figures.

The second part of the night was a live performance by the band The Big Pink for the Canal+ show "L'album de la semaine".

We had heaps of fun trying to understand the instructions and questions in French by the warm-up man and, in the end, we just followed the crowd! I thought I'd missed my one minute of fame at the Venice Film Festival, but there's a good chance I'll be clapping away on French TV!

C'etait un tres bonne journee!

Quelle bonne journee. The gardens at Les Halles look lovely, but the Parisians were probably upset to lose the old halls - such character. Sounds like a fun night at the Canal+ TV shows. L&G
