I must have jinxed the weather yesterday, thinking aloud that we should probably do some housework in the appartement, because today it rained nearly all day. Days like this are when you really appreciate that each Parisian neighbourhood block has its own boulangerie and local café.
As we step onto the street through the crimson front door of our appartment block, our local - Le Nemrod - is but two steps to the right...perfect for rainy morning coffee and croissant under the café awnings. The proximity of our front door also makes it a perfect place for the bar staff to gather for their cigarette breaks...we often open the door to the smiles, "bonjours" and "pardons" of staff sitting on the step or leaning against the wall as they smoke, chat and laugh.
Washing on, cleaning done...over to the boulangerie across the road for lunch à emporter, into Le Nemrod for coffee to go, and home to our cosy appartement for déjeuner. I don't mind that it's raining...I never tire of the Parisian street view - shuttered windows, chimney pots grouped on roof tops, snippets of French conversation drifting up from the street. This evening, a short dash in the rain back to Le Nemrod for dinner and a glass of wine.
Yesterday we went to a presentation at the préfecture of police on Ile de la Cité. The presentation - Soulèvement de la Police Parisienne - was part of the 70 year celebration of the liberation of Paris from German occupation. It was held in the Cour du 19 Août, the courtyard inside the police préfecture where the call to action commenced - the joining of the Parisian police in the Résistance. There was a fabulous video projection - a mixture of filmed re-enactment, cinema snippets and actual film and photo footage of the confrontation in Paris - as well as a re-enactment played out in the courtyard. It was a very moving presentation and it was all I could do not to raise my clenched fist and shout "Vive la France" with the actors. Loved it!
A wander home, stopping for an aperol spritz at Le Hibou...vive la France indeed!
