We decided on Parisien breakfast a chez nous today. There was some leftover Poilâne brioche to be eaten, some raspberry confiture...all that was missing was coffee. I grabbed my purse and we headed over to Comptoir Richards across the road. Can I just say...to pick up my purse, dash downstairs, and order a coffee - in French - in Paris - I am just where I should be!!
Anyway...Comptoir Richards sells coffee, coffee machines, coffee accessories...and takeaway coffee - in French, café à emporter. Cafés Richard is a name seen all over Paris on the cups and saucers in cafes and restaurants.
The young man making our coffee drew a heart in the froth on Brent's café crème (hmmm...well, there's not much you can do with a long black!). He had already asked where we were from...and he apologised for the heart, saying, "They do it much better in Australia." "Non, non," we said, but there you go...our coffee-making prowess is indeed legendary!
We took the 96 bus to Ile Saint-Louis and spent a few hours wandering around the Ile, and then to one of our favourite boulangeries in the Marais - Au petit Versailles du Marais. I love that, every year, the staff are the same - we know their voices, the routine - bread-only buyers queue on the left, patisserie buyers queue on the right - it's a well-oiled machine, but always with a "bonjour" and take-as-much-time-as-you-need attitude, even for slow French-speakers comme moi!
I could do this every day...

Hi Sally & Brent, Your Paris holiday seems to be all you want it to be. The 'photos are great......Love L&G
Beautiful photos. I could join you if you were ever to "do this every day".
It's easy to forget how amazing the streets of Paris are, and the small shops and local hang-outs that the average tourist never sees.
Avoir un temps merveilleux
Daniel
