Me and Vince...oh, and Brent

Great night at the festival del cinema attending Brawl in Cell Block 99!  One of the best things about attending the midnight session is that there are tables available in the garden areas and no queues for food or drinks.  It was a stormy night, so we were pleased to hole up at a table inside the plastic curtained bar adjacent to the Palazzo del Cinema, the venue for our screening.

There was excitement in the air as the red carpet remained out, security was active and giant size cameras were rolling across the terrace of the Palazzo del Cinema.  We joined the group along the red carpet...and along came the stars!  The screening was attended by actors Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Carpenter (who we know and love from tv series Dexter) and director S. Craig Zahler.  They were all very gracious, shaking hands with waiting cinema fans, smiling and waving.

The film was just as I expected - I watched much of it through my fingers!  I totally agree with the reviewer who described it as a..."gloriously gory slice of macho grindhouse"!  The audience was really in spirit, whistling and applauding as Vince's character wreaked revenge.

Once the film ended and the celebrities had taken their bows, our exit was fast enough to catch the 2.30am boat back to Venice (with some rather messy party people), followed by a 40 minute walk back to the apartment (as the vaporettos were few and far between at that time).  Brent negotiated the route perfectly...head towards Accademia, cross the bridge, look for the arrow indicators high on the walls pointing the way to Rialto, keep the water on your right as you turn every which way through the maze that is Venice, and trust that you will eventually land in a familiar campo close to home!  Bravo!

Venice is eerily beautiful and almost silent at that time of night, muted lighting reflected on the rain-wet cobblestones, and the sounds of water moving in the canals, echoing footsteps or voices of  occasional late night revellers (oooh, that's me!) and calls of the seagulls.  Bellissima!

Hi Sally & Brent,

What a good night. I am sure the walk home was quite a contrast to the "gloriously gory" film. As you say, bellissima.

Love, Lils
