There's a teensy bit of guilt about how relaxing our time is in Ortigia...but just a teensy bit, so I'm dealing with it!
There were wild storms last night and we were up at 5am folding down the lounge furniture on the terrace so it didn't hurtle out to sea! The storms moved on and today was again blue skies and hot.
Breakfast at the favourite...Café 41...then a wander around town.
We visited the Artemision of Siracusa, which sits on the edge of the grand Piazza Duomo in the centre of Ortigia. The Artemision is an archaeological site dating back to the 6th century BC with remains of an ionic temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis. The initial discovery was made in 1910, and exploration of the site continued for a century, uncovering a crypt, tools, ceramic fragments and stone huts dating to the Middle Ages. The site is atmospheric, not very large, but there's lots of information about what you see, and it's sitting 'in situ', underneath a stone pavilion built in 2005 that earned architectural awards for its design.
Post siesta period, we headed out to dinner at Moon, a vegan restaurant recommended by both Lonely Planet and Giovanni, the owner of the apartment. Moon is much more than just a vegan wholefoods restaurant...it's a performance space and a cultural centre that welcomes artists, musicians and practitioners of holistic arts - of all ages. Now, for those of you who know kransky loving, burger and bacon man Brent, you may find this hard to believe...but he loved it! He tucked into his chick pea pancake filled with eggplant, lime and cumin just like it was a usual Friday night burger! All dishes are created when ordered and all desserts, cheeses, sauces are made in-house. For dessert I had a dark chocolate mousse which is sweetened with agave in place of sugar and topped with soy cream - it was fantastic. Mm, mmm...feeling a little like these furry friends...
