Birgu is our neighbourhood for the first week of our Malta stay. After the Great Siege of 1565, the area was renamed Vittoriosa, but it's often still referred to as Birgu...I guess it takes a while for a new name to become a household word!
The architecture and stone streets are atmospheric and, from the waterfront, there are views across to the capital city of Valletta.
We spent today wandering the streets, and climbed in and around Fort St Angelo at the tip of the Vittoriosa peninsula. The fort has existed in some form since the 9th century, and parts of it have been restored and are now open to public access.
There's so much history here...and I'm loving all the references to the Knights, their Grand Masters, their Auberges...

So much history, truly wonderful. That blue balcony is certainly making a statement.
