The cattedrale was rebuilt following the 1693 earthquake in this region of Sicily, but there remains part of the original altar from the 15th century, together with stone friezes depicting the martyrdom of Saint George. These chiselled pieces of history are kept in a room separate from the main cathedral and were the highlight of our visit. At the other end of town is the portico - the ornate entrance to the church - that also survived the earthquake.
I love the stories depicted in these carved structures and, even more, I marvel that they still exist today.
More time spent exploring the city. We came across a modest doorway with a sign prodotti tipici siciliani...and stopped for lunch. There were three tables inside, a counter displaying homemade dishes and snacks, and the lovely signora of the kitchen taking orders and serving scrumptious meals...set to a snappy Italian soundtrack in the background. It was like dropping in for a meal at a friend's house! These are the gems you discover when you have some time just to wander.
