Un petite decouverte of rive gauche

Began the day with coffee in rue Saint Antoine then headed off across pont Sully to the left bank to explore the Latin and Saint Germain quartiers. What did we see? Two of the most entertaining sights were of riders on motor scooters. The first was a father and daughter on motor scooter, dad with baguette in hand and ... yes ... he bit off the end as he rode. I know how irresistible those baguettes are! The second was two young guys riding together, stopped at opposite parts of an intersection, one tossing the cigarette lighter to the other so they could smoke as they rode! Ahhh, the French!

Made our way to the Jardin des Plantes. There was an exhibition in the garden, along one fence, of huge photographs of insects. They were spectacular.

Followed our map to the pedestrian market street of rue Mouffetard and stopped for coffee. The school children were out for lunch and we watched them line up at the local kebab shop - is this Paris or Coburg?

Visited a second-hand record shop in rue des Ecoles in the Latin quartier. While Brent delved into the New Wave/Cold Wave boxes I entertained myself with le Shaggy chien sitting in the doorway. The shop was called Crocodisc (what's French about that?) and had (according to he who knows) an amazing collection of vinyl, all perfectly catalogued. He did look funny with arms balancing New Order records - a little like a waiter trained in the art of record service!

The streets of Saint Germain hint wealth and the perfect symmetry of M. Haussmann's designs.

Couldn't resist a return to the Jardin de Luxembourg (only 40 centimes for a toilet stop!). Relaxed with a coffee and watched the tennis players in the gardens.

The Palais du Luxembourg runs a very close second to Place des Vosges as my favourite place in Paris.

Your 'photos are just lovely, I think the Luxembourg gardens are so popular with the Parisiens, because of the appartement living. What a treat to see the photographic exhibition, something quite different. L&G

I was just wandering aroung when I stumbled across these gardens. I sat and watched people and read my book for hours. There were so many young lovers kissing.....

I knew that our fox-tail grass seeds spread easily, but to see them pop up in the gardens at the Palais du Luxembourg is quite surprising. I find them everywhere, all of the neighbours gardens have sprouted the grasses, and, if you remember, one was found up Pearl's nostril and carefully removed by the Vet, and now, growing in a garden in Paris!
I love the garden photos that you have shown, and the wildness and unruly intertwining plants. I mean, what are those crazy bamboo structures next to the little 'C'est la rentree!' car, with plants growing inside and outside of them?
From your apartment window you look like Monsieur Jack and the beanstalk, and how heavy would that overflowing bowl of petunias be for that little nude boy to hold?
If you can smuggle this through customs and you still have room in your luggage, can you bring me a bag of French soil for the garden, some sunshine and lots of rain for me to save for the approaching Summer in Melbourne.
Love Fi

OMG these photos bring back a great memory of my trip to Paris in May. My sister and I bought a baguette from a little place where the queue was out the door and then sat in the garden and had lunch. I remember it being so green, luscious and peaceful.
