The photo of me is taken in the entrance courtyard of our apartment. The green door behind opens into a marble-floored foyer area that has two sets of heavy doors at the far end opening onto the landing deck on the Grande Canal. The outside wooden doors have an almost medieval bolt lock and are locked during the night. When they are open during the day we can access the deck through ornate glass and iron doors, which give us a view of the canal every time we enter the foyer. The entrance to our apartment is from the foyer.

Our architecture is not as magical here in Thornbury. We open a torn fly screen door to be greeted by a natty cat who has dags in her coat and smells ever so fragrantly of urine. If Paul could get his hands on that Medieval bolt lock, I know in whose direction he would be swinging it! Fi
