Last night we saw British artist Anna Calvi at La Gaîté Lyrique...performing her new album, which comes out in early October. She is phenomenal...petite, always dressed "flamenco" in sheer black shirt, 40s-style black pants, red, red lips and hair sleek and styled back into a bun. Brent (M. Muso) likens her to Siouxsie (of the Banshees) and PJ Harvey...and we love that stop start kind of music...falling to a whisper and then rocking to a crescendo. Loved it!
Also loved the venue La Gaîté Lyrique. The building was opened in 1862 as a venue for performance of operettas. In the 1980s the venue was mostly destroyed, but was rebuilt and reopened in 2010 with an historical foyer, performance venues, exhibitions spaces, artist spaces and more. Can't wait to come back again!
Caught the metro back to Bastille and walked home through the narrow Marais streets. I love the evening when the lights are on in the apartments...you catch a glimpse of chandeliers, art on the walls...and the open, lit windows are like an invitation into a secret Parisien world...
