Today we visited the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. We haven't been to this gallery before and it was interesting to go following our visit to the Institut du Monde Arabe because both buildings were created by the same architect - Jean Nouvel. The building is set amidst a natural, almost wild garden and the huge glass wall panels allow the garden to surround you as you move through the gallery.
The current exposition, Mémoires Vives - 30 ans, is, for five months, a constantly transforming presentation of works from the exhibitions held over the gallery's 30 year history. There is a huge screen playing a rotation of short films - we timed our visit so that we could see films by Beat Takeshi Kitano and David Lynch. The screen is amazing, allowing films to be shown in daylight, and the soaring glass walls continue the transparency between the you and the garden.
The works on display were a mix of installations, sculptures, film, photography - we loved it! Our favourites were the works Hugh, le chat guitariste by Alain Séchas (1997) and Découverte exceptionnelle! On a retrouvé les plans des armes secrètes de l'Armée impériale japonaise! by Takeshi Kitano (2009), some black and white photographs by Herb Ritts...and the garden.
As we left the gallery, Brent commented, "I want more" - so much of Paris leaves us feeling this way!
