Messina and back

A picturesque sunrise this morning, reflecting red across the water.

Breakfast at Bam Bar - naturalmente - and then the train to Messina.  Brent had located a record shop he was interested to visit, and we wanted to get familiar with the stations in Taormina and Messina as we will be travelling by train when we leave on Monday.

The record shop held no treasure (well, nothing priced well enough for Brent!), but the train trip - about an hour - was scenic, tracking the coast all the way.  Two towns we passed through - tiny, pretty towns perched alongside the sea - were destroyed in October 2009 by mudslides during severe rain storms.  They look so idyllic in the calm of the sunshine...it's hard to imagine tragedy like that.

On our return to Taormina station we caught the bus to town.  The station is a steep 4 km from town, and it's one of those rather hairy bus trips, winding around the mountain on narrow roads, to get there.  It's certainly a fabulous view down to the sea, but when you can only see the grassy edge of the road atop a sheer drop, it seems an extraordinarily loooong 4km!

Back in Taormina, stopped for a sandwich at the Sicilian Store (such a pleasure!) - followed by a little shopping, and picked up a homemade pasta meal for dinner from Da Cristina.  There's an icy prosecco waiting at home, so it will be nice to stay in tonight and enjoy some bubbles as the coast starts to twinkle with the night lights.

After your loooong 4km bus ride, I am sure you enjoyed the icy prosecco. The 'photos are great.
