James Ellroy at Cinémathèque Française

Last night we visited Cinémathèque Française for an event, part of their current season 30 ans de Rivages/Noir, which celebrates 30 years of the publisher Rivages/Noir - a French publisher of crime and detective novels - screening 30 films adapted from 30 crime novels.

Now, for those of you who don't know him, Monsieur is a fan of crime - not in real life, but in novels and on film - and one of his most read authors is James Ellroy.  He was very excited to score tickets to the event at Cinémathèque Française, which included a book signing by James Ellroy (of his latest book Perfidia), a conversation with James Ellroy on his writing influences and his involvement with the film industry, followed by a screening of the film noir Out of the Past from 1946, starring Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas (a super-handsome Robert Mitchum I might add!)

James Ellroy was totally entertaining, his lingo just like his novels, and he delivers every line as if the words should be remembered.

While we were waiting in the signing line, we met a lovely young woman.  Her older sister - a James Ellroy fan from her teens - lives in the south of France and was unable to attend the event.  She was there on her sister's behalf and told us how, when she was young, she was afraid of the James Ellroy books her sister read.  She was really nervous to meet the man, and quite emotional because she really wanted her sister to be there.  What was very sweet was that she had written James Ellroy a note, attached it to a stamped envelope addressed to her sister, asking him if would write - and she hoped to hand him the envelope at the signing.  When we caught up with her after the signing, she said that James Ellroy was very kind and he put the envelope in his shirt pocket.  I hope he writes.  When she left after the conversation session, she blew us a kiss, and I thought how lucky we are to meet such diverse but connected people in our travels.

I will let you judge from the photos below just how happy Monsieur was, or was it just that JE said that he knew Melbourne, it's "Hot as f**k!".

How wonderful for Brent, who I must say seems as relaxed and happy and at home as much as you are in Paris! Love to you both xx
