Spent the most part of the day wandering the 5th and 6th arrondissements and visiting the specialist cd, vinyl and book shops that can be found in these areas - probably because these quartiers are the haunts of the students at the Paris universities. Lots of second hand goodies to be found!
Brent's new project involves a collection of rare 80s vinyl (after seeing what has moved into the new house in Carlton I'm not sure there's room for more collecting!) and he was on the hunt for a list of special items. The visit to Crocodisc was a success with the above find (I won't bore you all with the details of why it's so wonderful!) but not without some pain - in his back to be precise! All the 80s "cold wave" vinyl is stacked alphabetically in heavy boxes on the floor and one has to bend down in a narrow aisle space, slide out the box, flick through, carefully remove that oh so special find and then slide the box back into position. After what seemed an immeasurable time I was passed "the find" and informed in a tortured whisper that the last box had caused an immediate back injury! Luckily this is just a strained muscle of some sort and he is still walking tall, albeit with a grimace! I'm sure it will only be a day or two and we'll be back to finish sorting through those boxes! I'm sure there's a song in this...

Hi Sally and Brentivou (the record –collector formerly known as Brentivvani)
Brent better be careful in that record shop. Many people have left their hearts in Paris; he may be the first to leave one of his vertebrae. Mind you it would be worth it if it extends his collection of early 80’s vinyl.
I think you might proof-read before posting your Blog Sally – did you know you wrote: ‘I'm not sure there's room for more collecting!’ No more room? NO MORE ROOM!! How could you not spot such a glaring mistake? When the furniture, the groceries and the less appealing members of the family have been put out on the street then, and only then, is there no more room for an indispensable addition to a collection.
You were more accurate when you thought there might be a song in Brent’s sorry experience. It has already been written by the Gang of Four. They originally called it – ‘A Guy Was in Paris and Stuffed His Back in a Second-Hand Record Shop When He Got Excited and Suddenly Lunged for an 80’s British New Wave / Synth Pop Record by Positive Noise.’ However, as they couldn’t fit the title on the record cover they just called it ‘Anthrax’. If you know the tune you can sing along to the strangely familiar lyrics:
When collectin’ records be wary of stacks
Ya spine is more important than vinyl with tracks
And Brent feels like a beetle on its back
A synth-pop record his spinal column did crack.
I was going to post a picture of my copy of ‘Heart of Darkness’ but a photo of an Ipod with a little picture of the cover is not very exciting. Still you have to like a band that comes up with the song title – ‘Love Is A Many-Splintered Thing’. But love is not a many splintered backbone so collect, but collect carefully Brent – no point getting a suitcase of records but being unable to carry them to the plane.
Glad to see you are back on dry land in Paris and the hunt for the Border terrier photo can really start in earnest.
Love Fiona, Paul & Ruby
